Victoria Poetry Slam is a high energy competition of poetry held the second Tuesday of each month at the Victoria Event Centre. Most shows will also have a feature performer.
In a regular poetry slam, the poet must perform a poem of their own, of any style, within 3 minutes without the aid of props or music. 5 randomly selected audience members will become judges and are given score cards to score the poet from zero to ten. The poets with the highest scores after 2 rounds of poems is the winner!. Every slam has 12 spots open for poets with the top 5 going on to the 2nd round.

The action took place at three locations; the Victoria Event Centre, Alix Goolden Hall and Belvagor Studio. The location provided the stage, but those who stepped on it provided emotion, energy, and ideas of change through art. “It [the festival] makes poetry sexy again, sweaty, just real and passionate, it’s poetry for the people decided by the people,” said feature performer, Regie Cabico. The festival, which took place from November 10-14, 2009, included events like poetry slams, a poetry decathlon, an erotica show, musical performances, workshops and slam competitions.
